Instructions (edited for clarity and readability):
  1. Go to http://www.mapquest.com/directions (or a mapping site of your choice)
  2. Enter your current address and the address of your childhood home (or at least the town if you don't remember the exact address)
  3. Share distance and driving time. (In cases where different continents are involved, try checking airline miles and travel time.)
  4. Discuss.

Fairbanks to Phoenix:
Total Est. Time: 77 hours, 48 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 3613.71 miles

I've never driven it. I might like to, some day. I got the directions not door to door, but town-to-town, as I wanted to share the enormity of the trip with the friends list. Aunt-Fayoumis likes watching the climate change while we drive. I'd like to drive it with her, Guide Dog Aunt, [livejournal.com profile] swallowtayle, and V from my writing group someday. That would be excellently fun, provided that V and my aunts got along, which I trust they would.

Two Days

Wednesday was writing group night, wherein we discussed J's protagonist, the one I wanted to defenestrate after slapping around some. Fortunately, J was just as frustrated with the character as we were, so all was good.

V can't make it through the ordeal of the Willow House afterwards. Too many people, too much smoke, too loud, and too many random strangers/outsiders/weirdlings barging in. I have to agree with her on all counts. I cannot stand the presence of J's new squeeze; he rubs me exceedingly the wrong way. Part of the whole writers' group thing is getting to hang out with V afterwards. We've got to find a new place. And she's right, some of the people we've dragged along their first time here just don't fit.

Thursday was a whole lot of nothing going on, except for one session of flamage. I gave plasma, came home, and spent the bulk of the evening putting out flames in my community. People were banned, other people were warned. Ho-hum. Then I read and did dishes and somehow managed to avoid doing anything productive.

Today: work. Plus, some after-the-argument explaining over in [livejournal.com profile] cats_with_claws: http://www.livejournal.com/community/cats_with_claws/106600.html?thread=692840

And yes, this will mean that I can't make it to writing group this week. Which sucks. I hope I'll be all trained next week.

Had a good break with Loren and the Old Cat Lady Geek. The Old Cat Lady Geek was talking about her plans for a program to teach cats the keyboard, the alphabet, some simple words, and to type their own names to log in.

I have been, for the past month, steaming about a WordPerfect problem. After I installed the printer drivers that didn't work, the text of my files stopped displaying; the text only displayed as little grey dots, not as actual characters. The characters were still there: I can see them when I do Reveal Codes. They can be copied, pasted.

Repairing the bugger didn't work. Reinstalling the bugger didn't work.

I'm damn near at the end of my geeky rope here, and about ready to tie a slip-knot in it.
