The article goes on to say that it's not a cure and it's not going to be doing anything to help those in need of immediate help, but there's possibility to tinker with things and see what happens, and search for drugs, and so forth. It's something huge and awesome and wonderful, and it has the potential to be developed in all sorts of crazy directions to save lives, but it's not quite close enough to home for me to wrap my mind around.

Furthermore, it makes my half-baked idea that I was toying around with in ectogenesis so very on target. I had been toying with the idea of having an AIDS-like disease that was in the process of ravaging that universe's Earth, and having only some select people being immune to it (this being in the future that they were about to go into, hooray dystopic angst) and the heroine's missing boyfriend would have been one of the few immune...

I have to finish writing ectogenesis before I can even start on The Heretics' Flag. I think stripping Ectogenesis and re-writing is going to be my off-season NaNo-clone, because NaNo proper doesn't allow for that.
