Arizona heats up in the summer. It's an uncomfortable fact of life, if you live here and happen to be a delicate Alaskan wildflower. As I recall hearing from someone once, I think there may be a law stating that landlords must provide an operational cooling system to the denizens of their apartments once the temperature hits a certain point for a certain length of time (Google tells me that it's a nicely vague "when required by seasonal weather conditions") and technically, this thing is operational.

The thermostat on this thing is a simple dial, with no other switches or toggles or thingamabobbers that are visible to the naked eye, or findable by the naked fingers. The dial goes from Ungodly Cold to Hellaciously Hot (measured in °F), and the theory is that once the temperature hits above or below the specified mark (depending on the season), the fan will engage, and blow air past the pipes (heated by hot water or cooled by cold water, depending on the season), and once the temperature has dropped or climbed (again, depending on the season) to more reasonable levels, the fan disengages and quiet is restored.

Unfortunately, the thermostat seems to not have gotten the memo about it not being winter anymore, and still thinks that it's blowing hot air. In order for the fan to engage, the thermostat must be set to want things higher than the ambient temperature, and no matter how long it blows cold air, it's never going to get any warmer, so once the apartment has reached a reasonable degree of chill, I must manually turn the dial back until the thermostat's preferences hit the ambient temperature and the fan goes off. After that, the apartment can only get warmer, and the thermostat will be happy even if the temperature inside reaches 451°F, because hey, at least I'm not freezing, and that's all the thermostat cares about.

I shall sulk at the office the next time they're open.

My cabinets still aren't up, either.

Note to self: having what ought to be in-depth conversations about workplace standards and psychology with bondmate #3 can wait until both of you are awake and coherent. don't try to do it at night. 'specially not at three in the morning. bad lunatic. only will frustrate both of you. and you were feeling so good before that. don't do that again.

I managed to get all the way through work today, despite being dizzy and distinctly non-productive on the phones. I was doing a decent job, but today was one of those days where "decent" wasn't what was needed, "awesome" was needed, and I wasn't doing "awesome" today. I am very good at coaxing reluctant old ladies living by themselves to do the survey in question, even though odds are that they won't make it through the screening portion of the survey, as they probably don't use the products/services in question. But every one of them I can coax to do that, the fewer of them show up as refusals to do the survey, which is why I rock so very hardcore on that particular survey. That, and being able to get 7 in a day from time to time.

I was sitting next to Trader Joe's Queen Monitor today, which was fun. She's always a riot. She wound up swapping booths with the girl who'd originally been sitting next to me (the Big-Eyed Monitor Chick, someone I haven't worked with much) so the Big-Eyed Monitor Chick could sit next to her friend. I've embarked on a campaign to help level up Trader Joe's Queen Monitor's self-esteem about her computer skills, and incidentally also her computer skills, and when she said that she was the least computer-literate person ever, I retaliated with the (possibly apocryphal?) story of the man who carpeted over his cablemodem because the thing was ugly.

Darkside wasn't in when I called, but his mother said hello and wanted to know what was up with me. Sadly, there wasn't very much I could tell her about what was going on, because so much of what's going on right now is far too esoteric for the parents of certain bondmates. I could tell her about work, though, so I did.

Now, it's back to bed with me, for a much-needed nap.

Tasty fic!
