O+ rides again
Jul. 28th, 2022 03:14 pmThe directions landed me at the public front of the church that was hosting the blood drive, rather than the parking lot. Fortunately I observed that there didn't seem to be any parking around front and took the correct turn, and then there was a sign that indicated the location. Yay. (It's in the hilly part of town, so the wrong turn might have been an extra 5-10 minutes.)
It was hot, of course, but they had all the fans going inside. That meant that any airborne viruses would have been all blended together, and I have no idea what the air exchange rate is in a building that obviously old. Probably not great! The person doing check-in had a hard time finding me, but that was because the first page was double-sided and I was on the back. The person doing the health screening reacted to my inevitable "that's what it says on my driver's license" (gender) by explaining that they had to ask that question even though he'd just seen my driver's license. I explained back that my reaction was not about redundancy, but about my personal relationship to gender. The FDA doesn't believe in non-binary genders, and I was at one point technically capable of pregnancy, and they do have to ask about pregnancy. Honestly they ought to ask everyone that. But I was donating whole blood, so that's less of a factor I guess?
I was well-hydrated plus it was hot, so the finger-prick was messy. It took a little while to get seated, but I filled my bag quickly. They had juice boxes, so I could sneak the straw under my mask and slurp. Not foolproof, but some protection is better than none. Fruit snacks are also easier to eat while mostly masked than cupcakes.
I'd taken the precaution of using my inhaler before donating, just in case, and I was just fine afterwards. Woo. From the car, I called the dentist's office to see about fixing my retainer. They were able to fit me in quickly, and I got there in under 10 minutes. The dentist drilled a little hole in the plastic tooth cover and pegged the fake tooth to the retainer using composite. She admired the nice arched shape of the gum, which is there because I'm using the retainer religiously.
And then on to home, where I flopped on my bed and stayed there for an hour until I was feeling a little more perky.
Belovedest finished with one of the longer Summer Games Done Quick videos, a 4 hour and something game with turn-based combat and Yakuza. I noticed that my right shoulder was sore after dinner, so as a precaution I'm going to go low-fat for the next little while, in case it's my gallbladder. (I had a fairly bad episode in my early 20s, and from time to time it gives me a warning twinge. I honor that as best I can, because I don't want it to get worse. For whatever reason, gallbladder pain tends to echo up into the right shoulder. Bodies are weird, man.)
It's hot today as well. The warning light is bright magenta, and the back porch thermometer is hovering around 90. The heat pump is performing well.
