From the Bar of the Lunatic (with the help of shywickedpixie): Butterbeer

So last night shywickedpixie and I were talking, as usual, and she mentioned wiseheron's recipe for pumpkin juice, and that suddenly got me going off on a tangent.

I came up with a recipe for butterbeer.

Butterbeer, a la Harry Potter, is buttery and sweet and not very alcoholic. Hmm, I thought... Cream soda and butterscotch schapps.

And so it happened.

The golden formula is about 1 12-oz can of cream soda, and 1/2 shot of butterscotch schnapps (or a whole one, depending).

Mmmm.

eris_raven has been shy lately.

shammash discovered that the chiller unit was dripping again.

Morning.

Still haven't finished Paladin of Souls. Suspect the free samples had something to do with it. I'm not as gaspingly desperate, and I can take my time to finish it.

Plus, there was all that running around, and I was exhausted. Weekend days are few.

eris_raven isn't sleeping with me anymore. I think she's still miffed about the bath. Generally, she curls up by my feet or above my head. Lately, she's taken to sleeping on the couch. CATS! I tell you.

wiseheron was a kind Semagic Fairy, and told me about the new release. Aaaaaaah, Semagic. How do I love thy interface and functionality? Let me count the ways...

Sadly, the meat in the refrigerator that I cooked a while ago is no longer functional as food. I threw it away. Now there are domestic miniature panthers infesting the space around me, and stalking my trash can. marxdarx attempted to pick up and pet the stripy one, but wound up juggling a furry armful of claws. Little Fayoumis: "He's spiky!" Me: "Sorry *snort* for laughing *snerk* at your discomfort! *snork*"

Little Fayoumis's Strongbad mask is being made by marxdarx, from papier mâchè. The form is a balloon.

There are all sorts of glorious messes in the living room. The balloon is drying in the oven. The one I made (badly) is drying outside.

marxdarx is fussy. Am glad he's only friend and roommate and co-parent.

Little brats have been trying to be in and out all day. marxdarx and I are especially frustrated with Angelica, who runs off without her big brother. She can't be more than four, if that. I really wish I could tell her to go away and never come back.

Book lending, and much with the yay

othercat dropped by to borrow Paladin of Souls (I got it yesterday, I finished it today; immediately upon hearing that I finished it, she came over to borrow it) and we chatted for a while.

That was fun.

I'm currently working on a bizarre project: kind of like a bead curtain, only composed of AOL CDs, and failed burns.

Perhaps I could get Mama to send me some of the actual pony beads from that huge tub of them...

Marriage "Protection" Week

(a copy of my e-mail to Bush regarding his Marriage Protection Week press release)


Dear Mr. President,

I am a great supporter of healthy, happy children, and cohesive families. I do not, however, believe that civil marriage should be held to the same constraints (one man, one woman) that your faith holds. Our household is atypical, but no less loving and healthy for all that. Family, and love, in whatever form, not marriage, should be what you, and this country fights for.

A family should not be encouraged to keep a disruptive, abusive member who refuses to participate in the upkeep of the household, or contribute to the family's well-being clutched close to their bosom. A family should be encouraged to hold those they love close, and keep them always, even if that love, and that family, does not fit a traditional model.

I ask you, sir: should a young woman have to work four jobs to support the husband who is physically capable of work, but will not seek a job? Should that young woman stay with him when he does not watch their infant son? When he refuses to so much as pick up after himself? Should she stay where she is not respected, not supported, because of a dying marriage? Should a woman be pressured to marry the irresponsible, faithless father of her child in order to form a traditional family, in favor of creating a non-traditional household with someone loved and responsible, who will put forth equal effort to raising and teaching the child?

Our founding fathers came to this country so that they could practice their faith in their own way, unfettered by the laws of old Europe. Please, sir, make it as clear as you wish that traditional marriage is what works for you and many others, but do not penalize those of us who have found that a non-traditional family structure is what works best for us.

Instead, defend the rights of the children. Defend the right of children to have a roof over their heads. Defend the right of children to eat wholesome food and drink fresh water. Defend the right of children to have clean air in their lungs. Defend the right of children to attend safe and well-funded public schools. Defend the right of children to have affordable, timely, quality medical care. Above all, Defend the right of children to have the presence of the ones they love, and the ones who love them, whether their parents are married or unmarried, whether they are being raised by parents or other relatives or are adopted, no matter what race, orientation, or creed, and the right of children to be free of the presence of those who would do them harm.
