Eurovision 2023
May. 14th, 2023 02:30 pmThis year we had things a little more together!
I had the strawberries for my chocolate covered strawberries ahead of time. I washed them, and this time instead of manual drying, I left them on a towel under one of the small battery operated fans for half an hour or so, flipping after a while. (This is "battery operated" as in a modern rechargeable battery, not eating endless AAs.) I didn't get a perfect temper on the chocolate, but it was good enough.
I looked to Peacock, but the ad supported tier does not like our Pi Hole, and there didn't seem to be time to fiddle with that. We didn't see anyone streaming in any of the obvious discords, so Alex set up their VPN on the big screen machine and we went to a country that we knew had a stream. (We wound up in the wrong channel in the Doofscord for the live yellin', but we had enough living room noise to make up for that.)
There were at least 3 strong antiwar songs, with a bonus "please don't sleepwalk while everything goes to shit" song. Finland had a banger about social anxiety, and I was very proud of my miscellaneous Finnish ancestry in the moment. (Alas, that was about when our internet cut out for three numbers.) I have been tooting more than tweeting lately; I did a thread. A ways down in the thread I added a new set of tags, because Putin is a Dickhead and pointedly attacked the hometown of this year's Eurovision group during the contest.
My favorite was Croatia, "MAMA ŠČ!" which is a drag anti-war number that I loved immediately even without further context, but it just gets better the more I learn.

Eurovision allowed voting from the rest of the world this year! I tried to vote. Maybe it went through, maybe it didn't (my bank wanted to know whether my card was being used illicitly in the EU or UK or whatever), but my $4-something went mostly towards Croatia.
After the festivities, I declared it Pool Time. This year's pool is 8 feet across and about 2 feet high, and holds somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 gallons. It was 69 according to the surface thermometer, with an air temperature of about 75 in the then-shaded backyard. A bit chilly. We did the setup over the past couple nights. I'm on benadryl tablets to keep me from itching my mosquito bites, which is more effective than the topical creams/lotions/sprays ever were for me. Knowledge that would have helped me since I was born!! We have started to see honey bees from next door, which is pretty cool.
