I called the (toll applicable) number listed on the Ben & Jerry's website, left a message with Consumer Affairs stating my name, number, and the problem.

Consumer Affairs called back, and had cross-checked with people, and there had been an error (either computer or human) that led to some people who'd preferred not to get e-mails about other products getting them. Ben & Jerry's has been owned by Unilever for 5 years now. I understand about errors. That sort of thing happens. It's how they're handled that makes the difference.

She took down my name and snail address, and let me know that I'd be getting a coupon in the mail. Hooray coupons! Hooray friendly and efficient customer service people!

[Backstory: I got an e-mail newsletter I hadn't subscribed to. I was irate.]

Unilever spams, incidentally. I signed up for a Ben & Jerry's newsletter, and then I got other crap in my inbox today. I only figured out the connection when I went to the website to opt out (I ordinarily don't go to the website of spammers, but the "Suave Newsletter" thing passed my legitimacy tests) and found ChunkMail on the list of potential subscriptions. I told them that whether or not it was legally spam, it was still morally spam, and I'm going to contact Ben & Jerry's very much with the irate.

[Update: Some ChunkMail subscribers got other newsletters in error. A tasty coupon is to be posted to me. Well-handled. Hooray!]
