The Purple Hat (MythBusters-era)
May. 27th, 2010 02:31 amThis is my purple hat, with the button lineup exactly as it was when I wore it to the Mythbusters episode [redacted]. Images link to full-size versions; buttons are transcribed for those without images and those who have difficulty reading the cameraphone picture.

This is a purple wool cloth hat with a broad brim, somewhat battered as it is almost 20 years old and well-loved by a not particularly gentle young woman. It has Mardi Gras beads (green spheres and pink oblong) strung about it in place of a hatband, and various buttons/badges/flair pinned to it. (The green ones were won at Folsom Street Fair '09 in the traditional way; the pink ones are from a late-night BART party.)
Turning the hat right to left:
A huge rainbow badge (with a political slogan obscured by black electrical tape).
A tiny blacked-out button (of a writing challenge website).
A tiny blacked-out button (of a tight-knit technical organization).
I owe my peace of mind to sleep deprivation and caffeine
The blacked-out buttons are because the instructions to volunteers for MythBusters filming specifically said to neither wear nor bring any items with visible logos; the observant viewer of the show may notice that when items that would otherwise have logos are visible on the show, the logos have been redacted by physical obscuring (gaffer tape or MythBusters branding) or with a digitally-added mosaic. I wanted to wear the hat, but did not want to take off some of the buttons, particularly as one of the buttons is instrumental in holding on the beads. So I sat down with a roll of electrical tape and a pair of scissors.
( +3 )
I love this hat. The buttons on it change according to my whim, and it's seen me through good times and bad. This particular lineup, for the MythBusters filming on 2010 May 06, was one of the best times yet. Here's to many more years with my hat!

All the photos I'd seen of Nine looked fantastically ugly. I'm pleased to note that while stills do no justice to his face, he looks much better in motion, very much himself. Now interested to compare the actor to the character, see how different they are. (For example, Gillian Anderson, in the few bits I've seen of her being herself, came off as a perfect ninnyhammer and also possibly high as a kite; I adore Scully like nobody's business.)

Dreamed about the early days of the zombie insurrection, and had to remind my character to stay in character, when we didn't know that animals could get it too. Trying to secure a basically indefensible house in the outskirts of Fairbanks, with not as many zombies as you might think, no tests but checking friends and neighbors for the signs of amplification. Dogs in the house. That was the hard part, not reacting when I should have been treating the great big black labs with the utmost suspicion. Somebody's mother was having a romance with a MythBuster (Jamie or Adam, not sure who). (I think it was Seanan's mother.)
1:31 AM 5/27/2010
Went for walkies with aunt, poodle, and lab this afternoon; went to Trader Joe's after that; followed this up with dinner and continued computer funtimes at the house of JD and Ryan.
( Walkies, with attack mist and Dog Incidents )
I shortly found myself headed over to the boys' for dinner (I brought the rest of the bread) and computerfuntimes. ( Cooking. )
( A dramatic reading of a book summary; some body parts ought not to be haunted. (NSFW.) )
( Computerfuntimes )
Tomorrow: Farmers' market, TV night, and probably errands. Also re-reading The Demon's Lexicon so I can approach The Demon's Covenant with all appropriate preparation.

I've been having a lot of social lately; this is actually better than the alternative, as it builds up my tolerance for People and Doing Things. (Excessive introversion, agoraphobia, and lack of Doing Things and Exposure to People results in bad stuff, and then no ability to spring back when I do get out and do things and see people.)
Called best friend to babble bits about stuff. (Called at lunch; got some helpful suggestions. <3) Called later, got the machine. He then called back and we ran more of my battery down. On the bright side, now my battery's been drained and is recharging? (Best friend does not, as a rule, call the hell back.)

Yesterday's hijinks, the short and no-spoilers version:
( Getting there and making new friends! )
We got sent outside again for the actual volunteering bit!
Grant takes a picture of the volunteer crowd: http://twitpic.com/1ljx8e (I'm somewhere invisible in the back)
Not sure how much I can say about the actual volunteering, but it did involve a lot of standing outside in the hot sun. Many of us brought sunscreen (including/especially me). Sunscreen people became especially popular. I escaped the day with only a touch of sun-pinkness as of this morning. The taco truck was AMAZINGLY popular, and got a huge cheer every time. I may have sprained my voice. Tory and Grant are hysterical in person. They don't have to go out of their way to make jokes for the show: it looks like a lot of their general hilarious banter gets cut.
Tory with @JulianaMarie: http://twitpic.com/1lmb4y
From MB executive producer - Thanks to all today's awesome volunteers. You guys rocked! Our fans are the best!!
After the myth was wrapped, we all got T-shirts -- or at least, as long as the supply lasted. They'd miscalculated. The people who didn't get them then wrote their names down and they pledged to ship them. There were photo opportunities and T-shirt signing with Tory and Grant and the police. A couple guys mentioned that they'd left their resumés with other members of the crew.
The MythBuilders (our clique of four) bade each other farewell and headed off into the warm evening sun. ( When will you rise? )
12:33 PM 5/7/2010
Found out that I was eligible for free phone upgrade due to having it long enough. Package is out for delivery now; seeing if it'll come before I absolutely have to leave for the Dreamwidth gathering.

So perhaps I have not mentioned that I volunteered to be a test subject for a Mythbusters myth? And "No Pain, No Gain" has aired in the US, so I can give my details now! They had a (quite reasonable) gag order on spoilers, and I decided to err on the side of safety, plus my netbook died, taking my draft entry with it.
They had a call out on Twitter for volunteers.

I fit in the woman over 18 who has never had children demographic (they were also asking for women who had given birth to children w/o epidural, men, and redheads, all over 18; one of the first thoughts included "What, a Redheaded League myth?") so I emailed in. I was among the people who did so in time to be signed up, and fit the criterion of general good health.
The presence of "without epidural" and redheads suggested to me that pain was going to be involved, since apparently redheads burn through anaesthesia faster than people of other hair colors. The paperwork they sent mentioned that there was a chance of "discomfort", and if we had a problem, we had to tell them immediately. And they told us to be prepared to get Cold And Wet.
http://twitter.com/MythBusters/status/8285777241
Later... "[#MBMole] Half a tonne of ice just arrived on set. This afternoon is going to be messy"
And then Adam confirmed what they were doing:
Doing pain threshold testing all day here at the shop. 85 test subjects so far! The results are pretty awesome so far. Results get better by the minute.
Then, disaster:
No more tweeting from me because our test subjects are READING TWITTER! You guys ruined it for everyone. Calm down everyone. Just no more tweeting about today's experiments. I'm sticking around.
Then they sprung it on the build team. Grant was apprehensive. And isolated. And cursing a blue streak.
Later this morning, I will head off to be part of another large crowd of Mythbusters volunteers. I do not anticipate that I will get exploded, trampled, stung by bees, crawled on by tarantulas, or anything like that, but you never know. (Actually, I'm very pleased by their general care for the well-being of their volunteers, which is why I'm volunteering again.)

Stuff was carried up. Due to actual parking, I could hang out for a bit, and thus we watched Mythbusters "No Pain, No Gain" as Tif put stuff away. This was the episode I'd tried to volunteer for. Sanjay their medic got some screen time!!!! He is *awesome*, even from just the five minutes I got to interact with him while being screened out from volunteering.
Due to cryptic statements on Twitter in the days leading up to the volunteering, I actually had a good idea of what was in store for the volunteers. ( Spoilers. )
One of my LJ associates volunteered, and did go through the whole rigamarole, but (alas!) they didn't use her footage in the actual episode.
It was still amazingly fun to watch, knowing that I had a tiny part in the whole thing.
And happy Beltane!

Tonight during Glee, I traumatized IRC with a Luc Valvona song. :D :D :D :D
(Most of the Fishies know what I'm talking about here. Some of you may not. Heh. Heh.)
Perhaps it is a bit windy outside. I hear some banging. Earlier, there was hail. (Hail now makes me smile sweetly and look distant, due to the "DO YOUR WORST!!!" incident. Sweetie, if you yell that at the sky, I don't care if it's Arizona, your ass deserved that hail, darling.) (Insert linked memory of Voltaire-related shenanigans here.)
12:16 AM 4/21/2010
My head is a broken search engine. Tonight, Madonna's "Borderline" made me giggle inappropriately, because my head has associated "Borderline" with a song by a different band, and now the word itself has ... connotations. TURN AROUND AND TAKE MY HAND.
7:27 AM 4/21/2010
So last night I had a long and complicated dream involving god knows what-all. As I was waking up, we and everyone were at some kind of show, and there was some kind of danger, and people (again unspecified, but some were) were thinking about the best way to get the word out, and it turned out that the best way to get the word out was via the Mythbusters. Adam was there, and Jamie was there too, and Jamie had a secret Twitter account that no-one was supposed to know about.

I should mention the state of the current Dog Issues. Deacon (the black lab) is still somewhat creaky, but when properly medicated, he's mostly ok except for distance and stairs.
Dazzle (the poodle) was at the vet or somewhere ... the day before yesterday? ... and they noticed something in his mouth that might be nothing and might be some sort of cancer. Sweetie, if you yell that at the sky, I don't care if it's Arizona, your ass deserved that hail, darling.) (Insert linked memory of Voltaire-related shenanigans here.)

My head is a broken search engine. Tonight, Madonna's "Borderline" made me giggle inappropriately, because my head has associated "Borderline" with a song by a different band, and now the word itself has ... connotations. TURN AROUND AND TAKE MY HAND.

See, we'd just apprehended this guy who had met Stacey at a sushi restaurant, took one look at her general beauty and her legs, and fell for her and (because he was also crazy) basically started stalking her, ( Read more... )

They removed two things from his mouth. My aunt is quietly freaking out. And the poodle is resistant to being given pain pills, yet he needs them at this point.
Today's events included no walk, because it was amazingly windy (I love the wind, but my aunt does not), ( Read more... )
Even more meta is brewing in my head. You have been warned. :-P
Tomorrow: farmer's market.
Glambert == Mythbuster!??!

Okay, I have no idea what these little gummy things are, but they're not actually penguins. See, penguins do have eyes, and little stubby wings, and feet, and cute little bellies, but penguins have *a beak*. They do not have a nose and a great big smile. Perhaps it's time for another bewildered letter about accuracy in packaging.
They're sweeter than your average gummy bear.

I managed to escape the wrath of JD and Teshypants by not actually singing aloud to the episode, since it was all Madonna songs, which means I had a fighting chance of having them memorized. (And when they switched up the arrangement and had different lyrics in different places, it tripped me up.) So I was lip-synching, with full diapragm action. The result? HIGH AS A FUCKING KITE MAN. (OH GOD I THINK I'M FALLING / OUT OF THE SKY / I CLOSE MY EYES / HEAVEN HELP ME...)
So wouldn't it be hilarious to dance a first dance with $spouse at your wedding to "Like A Virgin"? :D :D :D :D (oh Connie, get out of my head, sweetie, your squee is sometimes not helpful.) (that's does-not-exist-in-this-universe Connie, not

Geek Housekeeping scribbles:
Aug. 7th, 2006 12:26 amMythbusters on the 5-second rule. My conclusions from same: "If it's dry, you shouldn't die. If it's wet, don't bet."
Duplicate the Mythbusters' 5-second-rule surface-culture explorations in your own kitchen! (You may not want to eat there again!)
Kitchen science: using ice cubes to cool very hot crock pot stews to a temperature where they'll be safer when refrigerated.
Also, split up very hot things-to-be-chilled into smaller portions, to avoid them remaining at temperatures where Things Like to Grow for very long. Recommended: food handler's card training, much in the same way that most computer-geeks have accumulated enough general machine knowledge to pass an A+ course, even if they have never gone for that.
Cookbooks and recipes are the reusable code of the cooking world. Someone else figured out that this hack works. It will probably work for you, perhaps with a little tweaking. Keep to the standards until you're comfortable customizing it.
The crockpot is a wonderful method of doing a batch job while cooking.
http://cookingforengineers.com/ is a wonderful place for kitchen geekery. Take note of the recipes -- they're very easy to follow if you're used to following graphic diagrams. Flow is left to right and top to bottom, like typical English-language writing.
For the love of gods, under-salt while cooking and bring the shaker, rather than over-salting.
Do not thermally shock your cookware -- if it's hot and needs to be washed, get the sink started running *hot* water, rather than dunking it in COLD.

Jul. 16th, 2006 10:25 pmDarkside is a sweetheart. We talked for over an hour. Does anyone know if there are actual Mythbusters shirts that have that quote on them? Much giggling and geeking. If ever I needed encourgement to geek out more, there it is.
In related news, I may actually be able to give Darkside something for Christmas that I know he actually wants.
Started out the shift attempting to teach the new trainee. We had fun, but there were only six of our people in. Grandma Cinderella went home dizzysick. One of Team 2's jobs was short one person, and there was no one who could be pulled to fill in. I grabbed a headset and waded in. I held my own pretty well, too, even though I'd not been on it in over four years. I had fun drawing.
I hope to be able to cut down to a four day week soon. I have been pulling 50 hour weeks without even trying. I could probably pull a 60 hour week easily. Darkside teases me about it when I complain, saying it's my fault. I complained to Stressy College Chick about being slow. She said I was responsible and thorough. And I am that.
I sleep now. I give roomie a ride in the early morning.
