Today: cleaning, trying to catch up, writing, pizza-fetching, Glee. Called Drewface. Mathsie pokes Drewface. Drewface is not on Sprint. Plans to catch up with Mathsie happen after Oregon.

Appear to have slept the better part of 12 hours. Woops. Ah well. I wasn't using today for much of anything anyway. Also, it appears to be raspberry-leaf tea season again.

Excited. Will need sleep though. Glad I got a lot of it earlier.

OMG my feet still hurt. On the bright side, the myth that my knee will assassinate me if I stand on it all day? Busted! (Look for me in my purple hat in 2-4 months in part of a crowd scene.)

Went to bed about when I planned to. Woke up at 11pm. Alas. Tried to get back to sleep. Read for a while. That failed. About ten spoilers and a complete modem & router reboot later (a friend's collecting spoilers from anything and everything) I'm actually feeling tired.

Effective now until my schedule changes: if you see me on IRC past 9pm on a weeknight for the next three weeks, or past 8pm on a work night starting the 2nd week in August, you are perfectly within your rights to smack me and tell me to get my ass to bed. (That's GMT -7, for non-locals.) However, I'll be getting up at 5-something for training, and 4-something for work, so some of y'all may see me up anyway.

And speaking of spoilers, a heads-up on one of the latest twits amusing themselves at the expense of the HP spoiler-sensitive.

Really seriously need to look on Judy's Book about local dentists, as the situation is getting critical, then get back to Mama about what I've found.
Tomorrow (well, today) is the Supervisor Party at work.
Friday, I need to get the remaining fudge components and assemble them.
Saturday is the Phone Goon Party, the one I'm part of the committee on. (We don't have time to discuss this in committee!)
Sunday maybe Darkside will be up for some socializing.
Monday, work again, and probably another Dreaded 6-Hour Spreadsheet.
Tuesday is planned for Anime Night. [livejournal.com profile] myrrhianna, would you be up for that/would that be logistically possible for y'all? The short bus The carpool departs five-ish from My Place in the direction of Scottsdale via the 51 northbound. Things can be adjusted.
Wednesday is writer's group again.
Thursday is Solstice.
Friday, gods know what.
Saturday is the 23rd and I have no current plans.
Sunday is the 24th, Christmas Eve. I have no current plans.
Monday is the 25th, Christmas. I have no current plans.
Tuesday, back to the grind, I think. That week at work is going to be slow, and people are going to be doing training and cleaning. Skeleton crew. I don't know what my role in the madness will be. That weekend and Monday is the new year.

Darkside has first dibs on my holiday time. This is valid from when I realized that he had root access until potentially forever, as he is in the #1 spot of Family of the Heart, and has earned his place there.
The greater part of the biological clan and and spr0t have second dibs. (I used up vacation time on the LLG Existential Crisis, so I have virtually none to burn, and I am in Broke And Proud mode. This makes the whole vacation-with-family like I do from time to time not so viable, given that I actually do need to work. However, there's some local spr0t, depending on who's around, and things could be fun.)

My Semagic is b0rked. I'm thinking it's the IE-7 update.

Group was mostly excellent except for M having one of her, um, moments. That was after, not at -- evidently when she's supposed to meet up with someone at Location A, and we switch the venue to Location B, and the someone gets informed of the location change and shows up at Location B, this is Cause for a Hissy-Fit. This is because M is 40-ish going on 7 at some points in time. After exposure to her, suddenly all other implementations of Drama Queen seem a little pale and thin and not even worthy of notice.

Worked on The Hisssstorical Fic at group; read the Roomba scene from the Nano. I'm going to have to go through and re-write the romance after I get done with Chapter 1 of the Hissstorical Fic. (And I'm *dreadfully* worried about my co-writer, as some gnarly stuff is going down with her.)

Today at work I did spreadsheets in the morning, reports with Pink Shirt Guy in the mid-day, and decoration in the afternoon. Chaos was had by all.
azurelunatic: "beautiful addiction", electron microscope photo of caffeine (beautiful addiction)
Well, I'm up, then. I'm heading off to work, armed with cherries, extra pens, a great honking mug to be filled with Livewire, full makeup including eyeshadow and nail polish, and that cheerful attitude that you only get after you've been up for a few hours on not that many hours of sleep.

I anticipate a calm day interspersed with my frantic antics.

Oh, and I need to drag out my Access and my SQL manuals. Probably behind the roommate's desk. A little light reading. Oh, and talk to my satellite manager about a four-day week, because five ten-hour days a week is seriously doing a number on my mental health. (I've been carefully guarding my physical health, which is why there haven't been so many plasma trips lately. Got to have that downtime.)

Darkside is a sweetheart. We talked for over an hour. Does anyone know if there are actual Mythbusters shirts that have that quote on them? Much giggling and geeking. If ever I needed encourgement to geek out more, there it is.

In related news, I may actually be able to give Darkside something for Christmas that I know he actually wants.

Started out the shift attempting to teach the new trainee. We had fun, but there were only six of our people in. Grandma Cinderella went home dizzysick. One of Team 2's jobs was short one person, and there was no one who could be pulled to fill in. I grabbed a headset and waded in. I held my own pretty well, too, even though I'd not been on it in over four years. I had fun drawing.

I hope to be able to cut down to a four day week soon. I have been pulling 50 hour weeks without even trying. I could probably pull a 60 hour week easily. Darkside teases me about it when I complain, saying it's my fault. I complained to Stressy College Chick about being slow. She said I was responsible and thorough. And I am that.

I sleep now. I give roomie a ride in the early morning.

"any port in a storm"; this would make a very bad punchline to some kind of computer pun. Couldn't find a setup to fit it, though.

The other one is someone who's got file-sharing apps using ports 1000-10,000 all busily downloading pr0n -- he's got a girl in every port! (Unless it's gay male, but we're not going to go there for the purposes of this pun, though it would make a slashgirl's heart oh-so-very-happy.)

Monitoring. Right now is that lull between midshift and nightshift, when all midshift have been monitored and nightshift has not showed yet.

New structure means that the new sub-managers get the minuses, not the Main Dude. There is no Shift Ops Supervisor as of next week.

Cinderella is the sub-manager on duty, and is a little annoyed that she has to do all the minuses given that no other sub-managers are about.

New hires. Driveway nuts.

.... zomg wtf driveway nuts new hire mania bad wrong scary not verbatim not even remotely connected to reality or professionalism. To quote the Princess: "He's a pain in the ass."

The Definitive Old Lady (she of the red wide-plaid sweater and the white-to-pink hair) is out. I may wind up picking up some of her interviewers... or not. Since I may well be engaged in monitoring up until my time to go home, and I plan on bugging out at the requisite time.

My time of exit is 7pm. Break is typically at 6pm for most phone goons. I have 1/2 hour of mandatory cleanup to do. So whatever I'm not done with by 6, unless they feel like they want to get me to stay, I'm OUT!

(There's a thing with "Whoever needs help, I'm OUT!" at the workplace; it's short for "Unless anybody else needs help, I'm OUT!") It's very badly clichéd.

Not bad for a morning, though.

Plan for today:

Client call at work
Dinner with client at work
Writing group

I'm probably going to be late to writing group next Wednesday, the 22nd. Work called this morning and wanted me to come in for a client call. I'm a supervisor, and I'm still one of the first people pulled out of the woodwork off their regular schedule when the $ISSUE_SIDE_JOB clients are going to be listening to the survey.

I'm not going to be saying no to the client call bonus and extra hours. I'm very good with $ISSUE_SIDE_JOB. I monitor it very well because I can nitpick. I can recognize that the proper response to a "Nobody here" is not "ah, that means no one in the demographic category lives in the household -- NEXT!", it is along the lines of "Do you mean someone of $CATEGORY lives there, but isn't available right now, or do you mean that there is no one of $CATEGORY that lives there at all?" There are different categorizations for the "not home right now", the "they do live here but I won't let you do a survey with them", "no one fitting that description lives here at all," and (my favorite), the "you've got to be on crack to think that someone of $CATEGORY lives here, because this is an $INCOMPATIBLE_BUSINESS!" (My favorite incompatible business combination has to be "teenagers" and "strip club".)
azurelunatic: Rock in the sea, captioned "stationed forever on a far-distant rock" (Housewife's Lament)
I was supposed to have gone to bed an hour and a half ago. I've been running on not enough sleep.

Instead, I got started adding household tasks to my electronic calendar. I used this before with some success, until the household schedule fell apart, and so did the palmtop's screen.

I'm hoping this will work to keep me at least semi-motivated to keep house a little better. What I want is an efficient system that I run without really even thinking about it, because rote tasks are best done on automatic for me. It's gotten so that I have to actively resist taking a shower at night to go to bed without showering, because it's just what I do. Take off the clothes, and before putting on the nightgown, take a shower. (I am capable of going without showering while depressed. It's far best to have it become automatic so it takes more energy than I have while depressed to resist.)

With any luck, I'll be able to make housework automatic.

The end goal of all this is naturally to have a clean and tidy apartment, but also to have the apartment in a state where I know that it'll only take a few moments (well, fifteen minutes of whirlwind pickup) to have the place in a state where I'd feel comfortable about at least Lady Malfoy giving it a look over, if not Malfoy Senior.

... why yes, I feel like I'm preparing for a job interview, a little. I don't think they're going to stop by any time soon, but I'd be far more comfortable with them and with myself if I could invite them in for a cup of tea with a clear housekeeping conscience. I want to establish that I can too take good care of their son if he moved in with me, and I want to make that care automatic.
azurelunatic: Azz and best friend grabbing each other's noses. (best friends forever)
Called the blonder half after I got out of work for the day. Said blonder half was not in, but his mother was.

Grumbled just a teensy little bit about the difficulty of getting actual time with aid blonder half.

This may or may not have any results. They may or may not be good results.

But.

Sometimes he does listen to his mother.

I go to bed now. I'm tired.

Wednesday: work.

Thursday: had the day off. Prepared for what I thought was going to be a huge line party with happy activity fun stuff. Wound up being a fairly boring line, and people weren't out of the building very early.

Thursday at midnight/Friday morning early: Potter. Walked home. Gushed at length about the sheer delight of it all once I did get in.

Friday: lazed about at home. In the evening, suddenly decided that I was bored, and went off to watch the thing a second time.

Saturday: work. After work was out, a [livejournal.com profile] figment0 accosted me via telephone and chastised me for seeing the newest Potter movie twice without him (how did he find out I'd seen it twice? Is he lurking on LJ more often than usual?) and dragged me out to see it. Again. ; )

Sunday: Thought I was pulling a double shift. Stumbled into work exhausted. Much relieved when it transpired that I'd been faulty in my communications skills and my opposite was in fact coming in. Returned home. Went to bed with a splitting headache.
azurelunatic: "Where's the goddamn NERF BAT when you *really* need it?" Animated cartoon tech support loses her cool. (work)
Work has eaten my life, with no foreseeable letup until gods-know-when. In fact, it's likely to get worse.

The Check-In Princess has been removed from the check-in e-mail group last I heard; she's been in the office off and on, mostly on, since the new system went live, and she may be there semi-permanently. This means that there are only two of us regular check-ins, myself and my opposite. (I haven't a nickname for her yet, because I don't work with her much; we're generally on opposite shifts.)

The shortest check-in shift is generally Sunday, and that's usually at least eight hours. With just the two of us, we're each to be working 4 shifts check-in, and someone's got to cover if the other has to be out. There is one other regular check-in trained person in the building, and that is Comic Pirate Super, who is in Fulfillment these days on a regular basis (and therefore not available to fill in). Poser-Geek was the other check-in trained person, and he's not working with us any longer.

That would be dire enough, but we're also short on supervisors who run jobs. This means that phone goons are getting pulled to be trained for supervisory duties. Groucho Marx Guy is getting pulled now; Flattop Dave is getting pulled; Ponytail Dave is getting supervisor training as well as monitor training. (He was Fulfillment about half-time earlier.)

My opposite and I were intended to be trained to run jobs as well, but due to random people quitting when we were getting trained, we never wound up finishing. We've both petitioned to finish our supervisor training so we can fill in as needed. But the training is going to take time (ours) and going to take up supervisory time (theirs, to teach us as well as running jobs).

I'm feeling a lot more confident in my ability to be a good supervisor. I remember enough of the mechanics of running jobs to have a good handle on doing it; the theoretical hooks for the actual skills are in my brain already. I could probably limp through running a job with the notes I took last year and heavy reliance on other supervisors to remind me what I need to do. The retraining will bring me up to speed. I'm hoping I get someone other than Grandma Supervisor, because she prefers to tell what to do on the system without explaining how it's done. I learn best when I know why I'm doing it, rather than following by rote.

Unfortunately, as geek, stuff that's Heavy Geekage for the average supervisor is shallow to me, and I'm going to want something more in-depth than I think most of the supervisors are capable of giving me. What I really want is to be apprenticed to the back-room geek who's currently out with his tonsils out, but I don't think that'll happen for a while. That man is highly respected around the workplace, and I have the core technical competence to hang the system details on. He knows the refinements of the system, whereas his opposite number knows the basic functionality but doesn't do the little things that make the field staff exceptionally happy. Ah, well. I can start out learning the basics from whoever happens to be around to train me, and work my way up to learning the cool stuff at some later point.

All this means hectic schedule insanity. It's probably going to be something like me pulling five shifts a week for a few weeks all check-in and her pulling five as well, three check-in and two doubled up with me getting trained, and then me doing three check-in and two training while she does five check-in. And it's going to be insane.

Did I mention I was having sleep issues? Perfect timing for those. I've got the cold that's going around, the tail end. A little congestion in the sinuses is sufficient to screw up my life for weeks. My voice gets all nasty and rusty. Oh, and I'm working this Wednesday. If it weren't already apparent, National Novel Writing Month is over for me.

To top things off in an even more interesting development...
Short Chick Super was admiring my ribbons on Saturday (I wore the Ravenclaw colors to work this weekend because I was still feeling festive), and that reminded her that she'd been searching for a cheat code on something Harry Potter, or some game or other, and she came across a website. And the person looked a lot like me.

So. It looks like my co-workers have found my LJ.
It had to happen sooner or later.
Hi, co-workers.
azurelunatic: Abstract. (bondmates)
My schedule got fried up, scrambled, and served over toast. I'm half done with my work week this week at this point. My usual work week is Thursday through Sunday. (Four days. Usually over 40 hours at this time of the year.) This week I'm working Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Work is insanely busy. Read more... ) I fear becoming too sarcastic for my fellow supervisors to stand.

Other than that, I'm plugging away on the new book, which is now fueled by my work-related burnout issues, rather than hampered. I'm not sure what my options for the upcoming season of insane holidays will be. I have limited transportation, so Thanksgiving may be rather more quiet than it was last year. (Besides, Lady Malfoy hasn't invited me, and I'm not sure if she'll extend an invitation this year, given that they may want a very quiet family Thanksgiving, and I'm still dubious as to my Family status.)

"Behind on sleep" seems to be a chronic status and part of the job description, rather than an emergency state. This does not make me happy, but not many things have been making me brilliantly happy of late, not that stick. Last night I was very punchily giggling over, in turn, the stuff I was writing, and the Arcata Eye police blotter. The two bear a certain stylistic similarity to each other.

We've now got two walkers on the floor bearing the name David R. We have to distinguish them by hairstyle -- ponytail or flattop? Flattop David seems to have geeky leanings in his spare time, and has near-infinite patience with what I politely call "operator error" on the part of some of our less technically savvy employees. I approve. I have no plans to collect either of these Davids, though both of them are distinctly cute.

Darkside has not been about much lately. I'm hoping he's in this weekend. It's difficult for me to articulate exactly how much he means to me. It's difficult for me to describe how much stress I shed in one minute in his company. It's difficult for me to find time with him. If all else fails, I'm going to be using my e-mail.

I seem to be evolving into the sort of character who can work in an office. This is a crash course in office politics (and, in my case, how to avoid them). Read more... )

[edit: Oh, yeah. And I'm sick. Like, snot-nosed ill.]

To be done:

Shopping:
Kosher salt.
Random items of food.
Carrots.

Inform writers group about the little schedule mashup. Woo. (Intense sarcasm.)

Figure out what to do about the stupid wisdom teeth and so forth.

Per Dawn's instructions, ask Darkside if I could please have a regular repeating place on his social schedule.

Stupid schedule. I work Saturday this week. Goodbye, social life. Now I head off for nic & chocolate. I am geekwoman.
azurelunatic: Vivid pink Alaskan wild rose. (Default)
The Senior Check-In is in the office this week. The other junior check-in has a dentist appointment on Wednesday. So this week I'm working Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I as check-in. (I might go in for an extra shift on Thursday if I feel up to it, but otherwise I'm check-in all week.)

But. Wednesday.

Writing group. Work. Writing group. Work. Ack.

Well, writing group can take care of themselves for a week. It shan't be permanent.
azurelunatic: "Where's the goddamn NERF BAT when you *really* need it?" Animated cartoon tech support loses her cool. (nerf bat)
I wound up with a spreadsheet to handle the people and hours problems. Go, me. The office loved it.

The Check-In Queen has been in the office for the past week, and a few days prior to that, helping out with all the extra work caused by this system. People have been out, also. (Snarky Lady had a nasty, nasty, NASTY sinus infection attack. The Monitor Queen had gods-know-what happen. Chaos ensued.) Phone Call In Supervisor (perhaps to be renamed to ObsoL33t Super) predicted that the Check-In Queen would wind up in the office permanently, and that the other junior check-in girl and I would wind up full-time check-in. We'll see.

But she and I still have to split next week up; we'll probably do that Sunday. I'll be reasonably fine as long as I get some scheduled time where I can talk to Darkside, and Wednesdays free for the writing group.

Sleep now. Got to get up at 6:30, and in to work by 7:30. Yay schedules. At least this one isn't an extended shift. Not sure if I'll go for any overtime this week, though overtime is tasty and fun for the whole family. Most I probably could get would be 5 hours over, if I stayed for the second shift on Sunday. (And if we're short monitors, I may well do that.)
azurelunatic: "Where's the goddamn NERF BAT when you *really* need it?" Animated cartoon tech support loses her cool. (work)
I took an extra shift today, I'm taking an extra tomorrow, and I'm working a double Sunday. I'm check-in Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday evening. Hell commenceth, with extra coffee and sarcastic commentary. Of the evening shifts this week, I'm working seven of eight. Table below. )
