Less Thing

Given that no brawls broke out in the library, today was relatively uneventful.

* Fed cats
* Dropped Belovedest off
* Talked to Jack-in-the-crack manager, got replacement meal (from yesterday's event)
* Came home
* Tried to nap
* Succeeded at reading a book
* Picked Belovedest up
* Argued with smartphone
* Drove to Belovedest's work thing
* Laid on the horn at a really aggressive driver of a box style truck who passed on the left while I was signaling for a left turn
* Read in the library
* Saw all manner of smol children bumbling about causing extremely minor mayhem
* Drove home
* Helped search for Escape Calico, who turned out to have barged out into the freezing night
* Fed Meow Meow and celebrated a successful 💩 in the litter box
* Ate food, made more
* Brushed a snuggly Meow Meow
* Observed Yellface Doing an Hiss at Meow Meow, but they've been finding an equilibrium.
* Tomorrow we do more. I hope I get more sleep.

  1. Necessary, good: the marriage of one of my partner's friends, and the politely riotous celebration thereof. There was cake. There were mini cupcakes in all the flavors. The bridal figurines were screaming and flailing in the grasp of large tentacles.
  2. Unsurprising, bad: Mosquitoes crashed the party when the sun set. I am slathering myself in lidocaine aloe and regretting my life choices.
  3. Unexpected, good: when Yellface and Murderface got out accidentally the other night, they didn't brawl.
  4. Inevitable: Belovedest has been poking the software on a somewhat battered Galaxy Note 8 tablet. I volunteered to try figuring out how to mount it in the kitchen. Fucking magnets: this is one of the models that shuts off its screen in the presence of a magnet (so a magnetic cover will make its screen turn off). Thus idea #1 with the Sugru was a non-starter, unless... I presented my research to the household council, complete with crude MS Paint diagram. "But will it fit in a commercial case with the screen bubbling?" asked Belovedest, who had a good point. They fetched my spudger, at which point we found out what a swollen Samsung tablet battery looks like. It's sitting in the garage in the casserole dish of shame, powered down and nowhere near a power adapter.
  5. Inevitable and loud: Since the ladies had recently come face to face and nothing overtly bad happened, I suggested a supervised same-room adventure. Alex suggested closing doors. Then I released Yellface from the basement. Murderface was relaxed. Yellface casually strolled out. They caught sight of each other. A few things happened at once. There was a savage growl-roar. The cats merged. The cats rolled out of the living room, through the kitchen, around the corner into the foyer. About 5 seconds later, I caught up. There was a tumbling blob of angry fur and extremities. I reached in and extracted Murderface, who added to my collection of cat-related bruises. Alex appeared with a laundry basket. I handed Murderface off. She was not pleased. Yellface, despite having contributed most of the clumps of fluff floating around the foyer, looked undamaged but indignant. Alex carried Murderface off the scene. Belovedest located the guilt-minnows and started hand-feeding Yellface.

I weed-whacked the lawn some this week, and Belovedest got out the mower this morning. The tulips are quite merry. The irises have yet to show anything but great big leaves, but there's some little white bell-shaped flower in the iris pen.

Sadly, the iris pen is also full of morning glory, so Belovedest is about to launch a scorched-earth campaign against them.

The clouds today were fantastic. Rain with a little sleet, and sun.

Last night we took "the ladies" to the vet. Zoë gets a blood panel to make sure her 2 lb weight loss isn't something terrible (most likely hyperactive thyroid). Thea gets beef-flavored Prozac.

Belovedest picked up a sign for the laundry room. It's actually helpful as well as quaint. There was another option, with a little more innuendo. We'll see if it's still there next time.

I'll hopefully be able to get the emissions test on Monday or Tuesday.

We need to do the 6 month flush of the basement moat. Possibly tonight, possibly tomorrow. Tomorrow we're planning on going through the pile of old pants and take them to the thrift store. Still sound, just the wrong size.

Eve and I have been bonding in Pinterest over rings and dresses and stuff. There's this guy. To call him a high school sweetheart would be overstating the initial connection; he was just some dude off the internet with a few things in common. They had an on and off communication (not intense, just talking about their lives and whatever) but they randomly reconnected around Christmas, started getting close, visited, and are going to revisit the topic of whether they'll date in June. Meanwhile, they're cheerfully planning goals and budgets so they can get a house and be together on a sensible timeframe with a nice amount of savings. (My daughter is about as good at not being in a relationship as I was with Belovedest.) She sent me a fantastic early Mother's Day/birthday gift: a stunning Lioness Elise piece. I tried it on and it's beautiful and my usual star necklace looks like it's attached. (She asked for pink cotton sheets.)

My head is still full of rocks, but I'm going through library books at a good clip again. I'm in the Raven Boys series right now, and I've fallen for it. Chainsaw the raven is my perpetual favorite, even though Blue is fantastic and Gansey calling her Jane makes me laugh.

Today I learned that there are backpacks specifically designed to carry bongs safely and discreetly. Activated charcoal lining.

I was just recently made a Real Boy again at work. I am full of glee and exploring so many things I want to know about how all the systems work.

I locked myself out of the lunch room briefly because I switched from the temp profile to the permanent profile on my temporary prox card. Guess who hadn't populated their new profile with permissions for this building...

We're prooooobably staying in this building through the end of the year. I can unclench a little.

P.E.A. and I have been steering clear of each other lately. Aside from the possibly paranoid suspicion that she's talking smack about me to some of the other people on her floor, things haven't exploded recently.

Today involved two large football teams colliding. Unfortunately this jacked up the subway. I missed my usual train by just short enough to knock on the closed window of the train door with my cane. I was therefore an hour later home than usual.

I have a new commute friend or two.

New Housemate accepted a job offer! Their commute will not be enviable.

Car is back with the dude for now. My schedule sucks and so does his.

Household snapshot:
Belovedest, the homeowner.
Kittenpants, the owner of Belovedest. (At least according to her. Belovedest may take the very reasonable position that Kittenpants is a cat and has no legal right to property, and humans aren't property.)
Me, no-paperwork domestic partner of homeowner.
New Housemate, who we have known pretty much since Dreamwidth started.
Murdercat, attached to New Housemate.

Kittenpants and Murdercat are being kept away from each other. Sometimes Kittenpants gets stuffed in a room so Murdercat won't be so terribly mewed up. They have seen each other briefly.

Basement is de-flooded. Some workers came to install a moat. They dug a small ditch around the inside perimeter (making it necessary to turn the basement upside-down and de-install the built-in shelves) and made it the path of least resistance to the sump. It's now covered with concrete. The sump pump has been busy.

It's nice to have more people around.
