(no subject)

Yesterday watched most of The Mummy Returns with Votania and Nephew. Went and paid rent. Wandered around aimlessly for an hour or two, teasing Votania while she was on the phone with Red Sandlewood (who I'll probably get to meet when I go visit Grandma!!!), decided in anti-favor of anything for supper other than a glass of grape juice, an apple, and then made a bet with my stomach that it wouldn't reject more of the chocolate nutritious gunk and some vitamins (it didn't; I won). I got a shower.

evealone came over and hung for a while. I hit bed around nine, but stayed up maybe an hour later than that, even though I was that tired.

I'm sure my dreams were odd.

Today I shall need my marbles: Darkside's giving a speech. Break a leg, dear friend.

This afternoon's tasks: Pick up prescription from PP; deposit check from aunt; renew lease; collect Nephew from daycare. (I'm feeling less guilty about leaving him there now that his mommy tells me that he loves it there, the playing with the other kids and the playground, and is unhappy when he doesn't get to go.)

Darkside, shaved, in a suit, is a very good thing.

Mmm.

Told Darkside, when he was complaining about the suit, that he did not look half bad in it. Evidently Votania had told him the same thing a while ago. I mentioned that this was a severe understatement. [insert digression about understatement here.]


Walked into lab smirking about the general deliciousness. Ron asked me what the smirk was for. "Darkside's wearing a suit."

"Maybe you should burn the rest of his clothes," Ron suggested.


Walked down the hall. Greeted Professor Sandstrom [Kurt, the Defense Against Dark Arts teacher]. "You're awfully smiley today," he commented.

"Darkside's wearing a suit!"


If some men knew how very good they look in suits, perhaps they'd wear them more often.


Lucky me: Darkside has a job interview tomorrow after school. Guess what he's wearing tomorrow?

Glah: digression about understatement.

There's that very fine line between honesty and "was it really necessary to say that?" and I'm always finding that the grey area is more patchy and scattered than I'd think it should be.

Today, wiredferret, was another one of those moments that you and I both make the ouch-face over.

It's all about the subtext. Without it, most of the content is lost. With it, the way expression and preloaded meaning are used, a person who wasn't there but hears it with full subtext gets perhaps more out of it than was originally meant. iroshi, you're my best source to turn to on issues that make me scratch my head and say, "...the fuck?", because you see into this so very well...


After I mentioned the vast understatement that "that suit doesn't look half bad on you" is, Darkside mentioned another historical understatement of our past together: namely, his description of me to his father.

He'd described me to his father, when physical descriptions were called for, as "a little overweight." All well and good. Understatement, yes. When his father was not-really introduced to me at school (same place, same time, only female person in the school who Darkside would approach and speak with), Darkside's father's reaction to Darkside afterwards was that of reaction to the understatement. Yes, it's rather more than a little, by current standards.

[It's clearly something that Darkside is bothered with about me, but it's also, equally clearly, something that Darkside has accepted as part of me. It's also something that he has tagged as one of my primary physical identifiers.]

I told Darkside that this was a subject that I was rather sensitive on, and furthermore, that I am working to change this. Darkside said that it's rather easier to put on than take off, which led into a discussion of costuming, trying to figure out if there are any varieties of clothing that are easier to get into than out of.


Little by little, we're working towards a friendship where we know where the sore spots are, so we won't step on them, and so we can help each other grow stronger...

Poor Darkside!

Darkside's presentation was today.

Someone set them up the bomb.

Darkside, who doesn't drink, expressed the idea that he would search for a beer when he got home. I offered that there were some in our fridge. "I don't drink," he said.

You don't hug an upset introvert. Instead, I started cracking jokes about how it could have been worse. Unfortunately, all I could think up was Darkside's being dressed in ripped jeans and a nasty, oil-stained shirt rather in his nice suit, or someone throwing up on the instructor.

Unfortunately, this teacher is the one who grades with a red pen of titanium, and grades those of the male pursuasion worse. Darkside's entire group was male. As if it couldn't get any worse!

Dawn will give him hugs tomorrow.

Advice from Darkside

...on how to get rid of former boyfriends who aren't wanted anymore, and haven't quite realized it:

If you ever see them again, purchase a large live King Crab.

This should, hopefully, convey the message.



Gosh, he can get vicious. ...All for one guy who made a pattern of upsetting me? Wow. This is the same guy, though, who cheered me on for having bitten BJ in a very painful and personal place... I suppose it only logically follows that Darkside should still be showing the same level of protectiveness, even now that the acute phase has passed.

Hair

Noticed, and pointed out to Darkside, one of his white hairs. He has more than I do, and they're a lot easier to find now that his gorgeous dark blond hair is cut down to where the sun hasn't turned it bright gold yet.

He pointed out that I should be the one to be getting those, living with Nephew as I do, not to mention the cat.

I should challenge him to find some white hairs on my scalp.

Alienating Ashford

AJ and I have decided that while we're going to get as much learning as we can out of Ashford's class, his current attitude towards his students makes the class a big joke. The next speech up is the Demonstration Speech, where we must demonstrate to the class how to do something as a professional does it.

The requirements: Must be six minutes long, must have a visual aid, and must not involve bringing the following to class: Animals, weapons, or booze. And no, Duck, you may not bring in your motorcycle. We already discussed that.

AJ had been giving some thought to the requirements of the speech, and we started talking about it in the cafeteria this morning before Darkside got there. "What about cunnilingus?" I suggested.

AJ's thought, actually, had been along slightly similar lines. As a former resident of a nuclear submarine, he was thinking that he is expertly qualified to demonstrate at least fifteen different forms of self-pleasuring... but the cunnilingus demonstration was just too much for his early-morning calm to handle. He busted out with the snickering, and began plotting out the potential speech in his head. Visual aids would include an inflatable partner and a diagram of the appropriate body parts...

Non Sequitor

Votania's developing the interesting habit of referring to people who aren't actually physically present at the moment by pronoun. For example, out of the absolute blue, "He says ....", or "When he's done with the project, he'll..." or things of that general nature.

I'm used to this in myself. Heck, everyone around's used to this in me. I refer to Darkside in that fashion all the time, without bothering for introduction. Everyone who knows me gets to know Darkside too. It's as if he's always with me, in some fashion, and therefore does not have to be brought up by name, just by general presence.

It's interesting, to hear someone else use tricks of the language that I started with years ago.
