On the strength of the internet saying "Oh wow that was SO COOL", we watched The Old Guard.

I enjoyed it! It felt solid, and included women talking together about women, women talking about powers, Black people having a conversation about a topic including nonwhite people, women having a conversation about domestic violence, and someone getting a richly deserved comeuppance.

It also is about a group of immortal mercenaries who put themselves in dangerous situations. On a scale from The Avengers to Kingsman, this is slightly below Kill Bill, with plot-important and visible gore, stabbings, and torture.

Miscellaneous chatter about it, not trying to spoil the twists but not going out of my way to avoid things )

I got the call back from the phone repair place, who will be replacing my phone as the screen repair did not take. It still powers on and buzzes, but the screen just doesn't. Belovedest and I may attempt to extract some data, but I'm glad that pretty much everything I cared about on there is backed up elsewhere.

I was able to rescue all my open tabs, so there's that.

Today was hot. I'm very flomp.

Spaceballs: The Animated Series! ...Fear. (I e-mailed Darkside with immediacy, letting him know. He's not always the most up-to-date on current events in the geek world.)

Oooo, hairsticks. If anyone's looking to spoil me, this would probably be how to do that.

WTF. The passport that I had as a kid is long since expired. I've never been out of the country. I really have little need for a passport in my daily life. $85 is at least two weeks' worth of groceries.

The old huge machine I rescued has a motherboard, two hard drives, a CD drive, a floppy, a working power supply, no USB ports at all and only one ps/2 port, and Red Hat stickers all over the case. I'm going to need a PS/2 keyboard.

[livejournal.com profile] hcolleen made me watch M*A*S*H. The movie. It was decent. I couldn't help but think that if Mrs. Moon (high school Health teacher -- I miss you!) had needed to teach a unit on harassment and workplace misconduct, she would have broken out this video. (She taught the mental health unit using What About Bob?)

I will probably need to see the series at some point. But the small screen is not the place for it. (I was watching it on [livejournal.com profile] hcolleen's portable DVD player, and it was far too dark to come out properly.) If Darkside, or Darkside's old man, should want to sit me down and show it to me, I would have no objections...

I threw away a book today.

Before you go asking me what's wrong with me and should you be rushing me to the hospital -- it was Janelle Taylor's very forgettable Can't Stop Loving You. The book was damaged to start with: water-warped and bent and mildewed. It was one of the discards from [livejournal.com profile] easalle's living room floor, the ones that can't be re-sold in an online bookstore for even a fraction of cover price. The Law of Conservation of Characters determines that you know who the skunk is in a matter of pages. Not much suspense. It's written to about a fifth-grade reading level. It's internet-alarmist. It's "family-friendly" in the "small-town conservatism is a good thing" and "adoption was a mistake" fashion. I knew I was going to throw it out before I reached the halfway point, and I was wondering if I would throw it out before I reached the end.

I didn't.

I read it, I finished it, and then I started reading the book upside-down in favor of seeing the gruesome and bloody frames of Hostel. One of the IMDB users doesn't recommend it as a date movie. I don't recommend it as a plasma donation movie. So much so that I stuck around after I was done to specifically complain about the movie. I've never complained about a movie there before. Almost all the guys around me were going "Wow, awesome." I was not. I had the book up in front of my eyes so that I wouldn't be tempted to look at scenes involving manic would-be doctors with chainsaws. There are a lot of movies that get shown there that are tedious, or lacking taste, but this was downright gruesome and disgusting, and is definitely what should be an opt-in experience.

I have a new movie to recommend to Sis, though!

I was late skidding out the door today. I just didn't want to wake up. The office says that the A/C people are coming here next Tuesday regardless. I hope they show up in the morning while I'm still here.

The movie of the day at the plasma place was Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which sounded interesting. (I wasn't watching much of it, just listening while writing.) I had a decent stick, without much of the weirdness that's been plaguing me of late.

After plasma was writing group/Cafe Fiat Star Wars marathon. The rest of the writing group besides V didn't wind up watching the movie. There was some confusion about dates, which I must admit was partially my fault for just putting it in the community calendar and not e-mailing in person to talk unambiguously about it.

Tonight's movie: The Phantom Menace. Much fun was had by all. V hasn't watched any of the later-produced trilogy. Somehow, knowing that Jar-Jar disappears in the next two movies makes him much more bearable.

I couldn't find my scissors to change colors, so I stopped knitting partway through The Phantom Menace. I suppose I could have just not cut off the green and started in with the white... good morning, genius.

It's been great having a mini-vacation. I hope I'll be able to get to bed early tonight, but I'm not entirely counting on it.

I intend to get right back on the comic tomorrow, probably while I'm between calls. If I'm on the phones. I really need the schedule for this next week. I hope I got my day off, otherwise I'll be very vexed.
