Funny: P-p-p-powerbook! How to scam back an eBay scammer! In a 2003 stunt worthy of StrongBad, this eBay auctioneer smelled a rat with the winning bid. He proceeded to lull the scammer into a false sense of security, then instead of sending the scammer a functional Powerbook in exchange for no money, sent -- a P-p-p-powerbook. (Food and drink not recommended.)

Surreal: Sailfish! (via [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes) Elderly volunteers at a museum do not always cope well with seasonal exhibit change.

Death Metal: Death Metal Real Estate! (Link is to translation by [livejournal.com profile] thette, as original is in Danish.)

More Death Metal: Heavy Metal Fairytales This one's also been making the rounds. The setup: A beautiful princess is trapped in a castle; the castle is watched by a dragon. And here comes her metalhead knight! (Warning: not all metalhead knights are work-safe, or trigger-safe. Sex & death, not necessarily in that order. Non-explicit. Text only.)

Sculpture: San Fransisco. Sculpted out of Jell-O. Scale model. Includes earthquake video. Found multiple places on LJ.

Cats: Spainy-cat discovers wildlife. "...like taking a Chinese parade dragon to the face." [livejournal.com profile] wicked_wish's writing is a treat, especially with a side-splitting cat story. (Again, food and drink disrecommended.)

People with good links: [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking links a lot of scary and awesome things.

Sick Day

Monday was a day off. I'd worked 50 hours in a 4-day week this past week. There's been a cold being passed around work. Rev. Not-So-Nice Super's had it the most recently, and sounds froggy and has been constantly spitting out nose-crud.

Monday, I did not step outside the apartment.

Symptoms: exhaustion, dehydration, sore throat, general stiffness and exhaustion, a runny nose and tickly throat, and a general disinclination to face the world.

I curled up in front of the computer most of the day, and in bed with some good classic science fiction the rest of the day. No talking. No work. No real stress.

I'm feeling a lot better now. Yay!

I'm feeling a lot healthier than usual, actually. The combination of Arizona and the discovery of allergy medicine means that I can actually breathe for most of the year, and I only rarely get the deep, lung-rattling cough that alarms so many people, yet used to be standard enough to not cause me any worry. I remember an 11th grade list of what I'd wish for if I had three wishes included perfect health. That isn't a standard teenage three-wish request. I'd still wish for perfect health now, but that's more because it's practical and because it's a good solid wish not likely to backfire that I'd immensely appreciate throughout the rest of my life.

Remind me, again, that there's more to life than work? Because work has been eating my life lately.

Intermittent banging kept waking me up. Off to work now. Banging seems to be taco bell construction. Still sick.

Othercat: gate is re-broken. Also, dialer crash. Rose from dayshift warned me on my way in. Downtime. Since 8.

Schedule crash. Not in today after all. The princess was going to have me monitor, but I am sick enough to want home.

Stopped in @ the Arizona animal welfare thrift store & picked up a replacement tote bag for my disintegrating one.

Aggg.

Kid-who-works-with-me-now, you silly thing.

Can't you witness like the Cute Desk Guy, Darkside, and [livejournal.com profile] sionainn witness? Just by being who you are and being the sort of steady, dependable, and uplifting person that people go to and want to be like? Handing out literature, however cute, to people wearing all black and stars, is really rather rude.

a) Is there a Geek Housekeeping website?
I know there are innumerable websites with helpful hints for homemakers/housekeepers, covering the standard messes that family, kids, and pets make.

There needs to be a geek housekeeping website, with helpful hints for the sort of mess and household chaos that a lot of techie-toys cause.

For example, it may help to put your assorted electronic bits in transparent boxes on a shelf, so you can see the contents instead of digging through a pile. Cable ties really help to tie cables! You can suspend your cross-the-room cables from the standard popcorn ceiling with cable ties, pushpins, and Christmas tree ornament hanger wires very easily! An inexpensive shelf unit and a power strip makes a decent budget rack for hard-to-manage peripherals! Tired of turning off all the peripherals? Dedicate a power strip to them and use the frickin' switch. If you have spilled water on your laptop, unplug it and pull the battery, then leave it to dry for several days. It might not be ruined. Funky inexplicable distortion on your monitor? This can sometimes be caused by desk fans or vacuum cleaners! Or anything with a motor if you've got a CRT!

b) How do you rid your physical domain of the stench of a burned printed circuit board?
(A roommate of [livejournal.com profile] clarinetkid4eve had some water cooling flake out on him. Results: no two motherboards are not on fire. Also, stench.)

Stupid schedule. I work Saturday this week. Goodbye, social life. Now I head off for nic & chocolate. I am geekwoman.

It's flattering when a fry's electronics employee thinks you work there too. I am amused that I had to specify @ work.

Grocery vs. Electronics: when it's odd candy, you have to specify. Quiet geek super was amused when I said "Fry's. ... Grocery."
