Friday -

Turned my alarm back on for the weekday. Got coffee, went to Costco, renewed my membership, grabbed pizza because I knew I'd be late for lunch and Purple would be Out, refueled.

Purple was Out because he'd given his backstage pass to Murraya, and she'd said that she owed him lunch somewhere nice. Then she'd rejected a reasonably nice place he'd had his eye on as insufficiently Nice. Apparently the lunch they did have was pretty fantastic.

Later in the afternoon, lb grabbed me for a hot chocolate run. We chatted helldesk among other things. He'd tried to prepare his gutters for the onslaught, but the corner of his roof where one angle met another turned into a waterslide with water flying down and missing the gutter entirely. Not much of his garage got soaked though.

I ran across some photos from workplace events past. There was in fact a picture from the Halloween party where I stood and talked to Purple for a couple hours despite how much it hurt to stand at that point, which was one of the first times I did that. It would be far from the last. There's lens flare, so we're standing under a rainbow, near a Princess Leia and a pair of Organa-Solo twins.

Purple negotiated dinner with Ms. Antisocialest Butterfly, then asked whether I was up for that. Dinner. )

I stopped by Sprouts on my way home to see if their brownies were as good as I remembered them being. Yes. Possibly better.

Fruitcake, which I may or may not make this year:

Today I fucked up. It was relatively minor and the situation is resolved. And I'm feeling secure about not continuing to fuck up going forward, and that it was minor and stopped before it got to be a big thing. But still I'm feeling like I ought to do some form of penance. Read more... )

In contrast, the rest of my workday felt like unexpected competence, with intermittent chocolate. Unless, of course, it felt like screaming frustration -- I did brave the helldesk training videos for the new features, and they were kind of fucking useless on the front of exactly how you duplicate the one thing in the other method. Also they broke direct linking, which is just great.

Tonight's iteration in the department of things which retail workers have mistaken for my name: Anne. (Don't call me Shirley. :-P )

Everyone involved has a bit of a busy week lined up.

There is a fuck o'clock meeting for my greater department tomorrow, followed by a "thank you for being awesome" lunch for the emergency response people.

Wednesday is Purple's team's lunch-and-Hobbitry excursion.

Thursday is a conference committee tour of some on-campus facilities, followed by my A-Team lunch-and-White-Elephant.

I haven't fully assessed Friday yet.

Choose no more than two of the following: quick/convenient, inexpensive, Friendly Neighborhood Establishment. Which is to say, it was time for Vash to get his oil changed, and work vs. my sleep schedule vs. the need to either schedule or walk in hella early at the Friendly Neighborhood Establishment was not a good thing. So we went for the Not Actually Cheap place.

It was raining, which was lovely, although it did not give pause to the intermittent banging of various construction in and around my building.

I arrived in time for lunch. It was a smallish group, and fairly subdued. lb was home with what we hope isn't a broken butt; he had a bad fall while skating yesterday afternoon and one of the #adventuresofstnono crowd took him to the ER. (He's not part of Purple's regular lunch group, as he has a regular lunch group on his own floor.) So regardless of the rain, he wouldn't be out skating today.

Mr. Zune reported a hella awkward thing going on yesterday; I'll have to ask for an update at some point.

A lot of people were out, either working from home, on PTO, sick, or supervising small children partying hard.

I got the package from [personal profile] synecdochic! I have not fully explored it, but OH MY GOD THAT IS A LOT OF IMPS. HELLA DECANT CIRCLE IS HELLA. I can't remember just now whether I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Everything or whether it was an extra, but it plays rather better as BPAL on my skin than it does as variously edible confections. Clearly those spices are something I should look for in other blends. This is night and day vs. that one cinnamon one which smelled like hellfire and yelling on me. Also, All Saints was the perfect choice for a sniffie empty bottle in addition to the ordered imp -- it is exactly the kind of white florals which my skin loves so much. And the combination of adjacent All Saints and Pumpkin Spice Everything is something I'd like to explore further.

When we got to the possibly-social portion of the evening, I pinged IRC to see who was up for social. The only one who seemed to be around was Purple. I wrapped one bit of stuff, and wandered over with things. He'd been called into a nearby office. I left stuff on his desk and headed back to get a few more things done. Once he re-emerged, I came back over. We had popcorn, and rum in soda. Eventually his regular Friday night dinner buddy (a friend from his last workplace) called. He declared that he wasn't trick-or-treating (at which point I launched a well-timed, well-aimed bit of candy). He asked if I'd like to come along. Yes, I would.

It was good to meet his friend. She seems quiet, but really damn awesome, has the right kind of terrible sense of humor, and great at either not noticing or ignoring on purpose a host of irrelevant distractions. (Purple: "... wouldn't notice if a whole bunch of clowns marched into the workplace." Her: "I would notice; I would simply ignore them.") Knowing the likely size of the dessert, I asked for two spoons. Purple was still not up for dessert. I therefore took the other half home for later. (Yum.) (He would have claimed it for later had I not, however.)

Chatting on the side of the street between our cars is a somewhat different vibe than chatting in the cozy work parking lot. No hug, but that was all right. There doesn't always have to be a hug.

I had a candle quietly lit for a while after I got home.

Somewhat after midnight, I opened the traditional new text file for NaNo. Not sure what I'm doing this year, but it is what I do in November.

Woke up before my alarm, feeling reasonably well-rested, and having had first-thing-after-midnight communications to/from some of the very important people in my life. Had a brownie for breakfast, and while virtuously restarting my computer, I got a fair ways in to Archer's Goon. (Good stuff.)

I pulled in to work just after someone else pulled out, so I got a parking space that wasn't too horribly far away. The burrito line was very short, and the burrito was very delicious. I had lunch with Purple's gang; Purple's mood today seemed cheerful enough, if slightly frazzled around the edges. (This was an improvement; there's imminent vacation.) He's going with a few people to see Mr. Zune's thing tomorrow.

I like to celebrate holidays via seasonally appropriate treats. I swapped out my star-shaped candy dish with a heart-shaped one, and filled it with sour cherry balls, with a heaping heap of those little conversation hearts on top.

Before I could get settled in properly on the transcription, something seemed weird with the email shares, and I poked things and realized what had to be going on. I recruited Purple into the troubleshooting. I walked him through sharing his calendar to generate another notification, and discovered that the little problem was weirder than I thought.

It was the troubleshooting equivalent of a great big satin-covered heart-shaped box of chocolates, given to me by work, on our anniversary. I have been with Virtual Hammer for two years today, and I'm still just as much in love. (If more inclined to pound things with hammers, virtual or otherwise.)

There was transcription. There was inbox-wrangling. There were many things. Read more... )

It was a perfectly lovely valentine's day. Tomorrow we celebrate 2014's first Feast Day of St. Mark; there are several. I'll see if I can wake up early enough to do some errands, maybe pop in to work to make sure to set up the soft token correctly, give Darkside a call, and then take in some G&S.

Came to school at 9 today rather than my usual 6 (I worked until 11 last night) and didn't get to have a good conversation with Darkside until noon, when I walked him to his last class. (He was busy working on programming projects until then.)

I need to re-learn how to sneak.
Darkside's been nagging me about getting registered for classes. I got all the holds cleared today by paperwork; I just have to wait for it to clear from the computer system for me to be able to register.

Darkside bitched about what he'd been working on, HTML with javascript, and told me I'd be getting it sooner or later. "Yeah, you'll have the joy of putting up with me then," I told him. "I've got that, what, in five semesters?"

"Actually, I won't," he said. "I won't be here then."

That shut me up fast. Votania did tell me that Darkside is most likely moving out of state after he gets through college, something about a better job and getting away from his parents.

"You'd better stay in touch," I told him. We both hate losing friends from either them or us moving away, and I'm for damn sure not going to want to lose him, not ever. It doesn't matter that we're never going to date. He's still my best friend.

"I'm not all that good at writing," he told me.

"That's not what your stories say to me."

I told him I didn't expect essays, I just expected regular e-mails telling me that he was alive and so forth. "When you get an e-mail from me, just reply and say 'It's good to hear from you. I'm alive.' Just that."

" 'It's good to hear from you. I'm alive.' 'I'm alive.' 'I'm alive.' 'It's good to hear from you. I'm dead.' "

"Exactly!" I said and we started beating the hell out of each other in the friendliest possible way.

Darkside is the sort of friend, that once you have them, you never let go. Not ever.
