Today I got some stuff done that I'd been procrastinating. We're not going to do the ice cream today -- it'll be Friday or over the weekend. I did get some supplies for it today, though. I also got supplies for fudge.

This involved a trip to the local Trader Joe's. This marks the first time I've ventured out not in the company of a relative, and was thus interesting and exciting. I managed to miss my exit, and therefore wound up taking an interesting tour of neighboring streets until I blundered onto the correct freeway and got excitingly lost going the wrong direction, but at least then I knew where I was. I eventually got to Trader Joe's after getting turned around.

I hope that accomplishing most of what I set out to get done is a good omen for next year. 2008 was a bit of a rollercoaster, but so much better than some of the hell from 2007.

[livejournal.com profile] raranax is making bacon bagels. He has on tango music, and that's making me want to dance. Later, fudge. My aunt is bringing home the shelter dog that she's training, so he'll have a happy new year too.

Everything I was awesome at in 2008, I want to stay awesome at. Everything that needs improving, I want to improve.

http://www.davidlebovitz.com/archives/2007/07/making_ice_crea_1.html

My cousin and I are toying with the idea of making bacon ice cream. Possible limiting factors include:

My aunt will not be all about that
There is no ice-cream maker
There is not much room in the freezer
The original recipe my cousin was thinking of has vanished from the forum it was in
I have never made ice cream before as one of the cooks

However, there is bacon, we have recipes, and we are resourceful.

If bacon ice cream happens, there will be pictures, and since I suspect [livejournal.com profile] tupshin would take a dim view of these things happening in his jurisdiction without sharing in the bounties, we'd have to save some and schedule a visit to LJ Central.

Bacon ice cream may or may not occur.

Cluster.

My cousin has just discovered that the word 'cluster', applied appropriately, makes me giggle uncontrollably.

Also, the cheese board is not to be used as a Spanky! Spanky! paddle for the dog.

The filing crate (a commercial descendant of the milk crate) secured to others with cable ties could be a strong presence in the ways of householdery that I follow. Not for decorative purposes, because it's ghastly, but for something structural and effective and modular, it beats wire-frame shelving of that same general sort all hollow, because it has its own structural integrity that isn't those blasted plastic connectors. There's a three-crate stack behind the head of the bed for the alarm clock and now Allegra; Allegra will be retrofitted with a NIC sometime Really Soon Now.

Yesterday I got two calls, probably both about the same class of thing. One of them was automated with a number to call back as a matter of some urgency. The other was a Real Live Human Being. The Real Live Human Being was looking for Marx. I suspect Bill Issues. The automated one got forwarded to my cellphone the other day, and didn't get answered. I have an address book entry for the bill collectors of other people in my cellphone, now, just so it'll flash something useful with the Caller ID.

Qwest's IVR doesn't know what to do when you sneeze at it repeatedly, and will try to forward you to a Live Human Being.

Performed the periodic "take stuff off bed, put back on" today, because there was much of the falling-off of futon. I'd gone to bed around seven-thirty-ish, and was nicely asleep, but the phone rang. It was Tay-tay. Yay catching up with little sisters! In semi-coincidence, she mentioned a general "hmm, I wonder if hanging out with my cousin would be fun," for values of "cousin" who go to Reed. I have every faith that the results could be the sort of Family Bonding that's truly scary for a non-family onlooker, especially if pink. (And I do have the late-night brain, but trust me when I say that I at least know what I mean. "Get on like a house on fire" is the usual phrase, if somewhat insensitive given that my Virtual Aunt just had a stack fire and lost some roof.)

azurelunatic: Azz age 9 in white dress with red sash, holding hen Aurora Fayoumis, circa 1989 (Aurora)
It's shaping up to be a very lazy Monday. I woke up early, checked the time, and zonked back out. There's no clock in the Cupboard Under the Stairs, and no electrical outlets, so when the cellphone is on charge cycle, it's not in there with me. So it's a very timeless little room. I wound up waking up at some dreadful hour, seeing how very dark it was, and freaking out enough so that I got up, turned my light on, and eventually turned the stair light on so I could sleep in peace with the security of being able to orient myself should I wake up again. I'm not used to this place and finding the little lights in it, and I get claustrophobia easily enough.

Dogs seem to be back now.

Earlier, [livejournal.com profile] raranax was practicing with his brand-new bullwhip, trying to whip a napkin off a chair. I was very tempted to take pictures so that those that way inclined on my friends list could appreciate -- erg, what was Lois's phrase about Roic at the end of ACC? In any case, he was doing all this whipping while shirtless, which is probably not the best safety measure to take when playing with a bullwhip without much experience.

There is snow outside, to the tune of a few inches. Snow is good. Snow is not my cup of tea, being as I'm still ill and don't want to push my luck with my lungs.

I will be getting snow photos, probably sometime today, after I decide to brave the Outdoors.

Life is good. 70% chocolate is good. The current book shortage is bad. I should remedy the situation somehow. Perhaps I should tag along on the next Trip to Town.

Wireless woes. Connecting to the network fine. Sort of. Not getting network address. Dammit. Will wait until raranax arrives.

I sort of got to geog. bee. Sarah and Jay went out at first elimination. Jay answered carbon monoxide when he should have answered carbon dioxide. Sarah got a country wrong. We are leaving for California at 11:40 am. on March 11. Cleaning out file, found plenty of chicken books. Going to Pennsylvania too. Wow! Can hardly wait. Spent 1 1/2 hours in airport getting tickets. Lady let me, and humiliated me by catsitting. She put her cat on my shoulder, when I didn't want it there at all. Made me feel little again. [Guide Dog Aunt] and [Guide Dog Uncle] coming to stay with us a week before 11th. Randall and Kevin, the cousins, too!
